What to Expect

Bullets & Bagels, in conjunction with Chabad Center for Jewish Life - Newport Beach, is pleased to host an evening to share the incredible life story of the late Tibor Rubin (z'l'), United States Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.

Tibor Rubin has the distinction of being the only Holocaust survivor to receive the Medal of Honor -- for valor, during the Korean War. The program will present his remarkable history of survival, perserverence, bravery and inverterate humility.

Born to a Hungarian Jewish family, as a teenager Rubin was sent to Mauthausen and Gunskirchen Concentration Camps. After liberation, he immigrated to the United States. Determined to "give back" to the country he associated with his freedom, Tibor joined the U.S. Army, and displayed amazing courage as a combatant and prisoner of war in Korean, despite having a rabid anti-Semite as his first sergeant. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Southern California and spent his remaining years as a volunteer, attending to the needs of his fellow veterans, at the veterans' hospital in Long Beach...now named Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center.

He was was awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush during a ceremony at the White House in September of 2005 and passed away December 15, 2015.

Special Guest Speakers include Gary Nowak, close friend and confidant of Tibor, Rabbi Reuven Mintz, Chabad Center for Jewish Life-Newport Beach; Brian Blacher, Associate Director of Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, San Diego/Orange County; Shlomit Jackson-Jewish National-USA,Fund Director, Long Beach & Orange County; and Command Sergeant Major Sam Yudin, President of the Jewish American Military Historical Society. The newly published comic book, Valor & Virture, which includes Tibor Rubin's military exploits, will be available for purchase.  Tibor Rubin's daughter, Rosie Rubin, will be present as our special guest.

There will be a docent lead tour of the remarkable Holocaust Education Center of Orange County/Mel Mermelstein Galley, followed by a buffet dinner, short video and special presentation.  A portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Holocaust Education Center of Orange County.

Come join us as we celebrate this extraordinary human being.
